Project

What is a Gold Award: It is the most prestigious and highest level of award a Senior Girl Scout can earn with national standards. The award starts with a dream and a vision of something that would be beneficial to the community and requires countless hours of preparation, hard work, and dedication.

Our Project: Our Gold Award project is called Make a Wish for Seniors. Our goal is to grant wishes for residents at Hale Makua (Hawaiian for Home of Respected Elders), a long term care facility. In completing this project we hope to increase awareness of our often forgotten and neglected seniors in our communities. There are many opportunities for people to get involved at Hale Makua. You can help out with Bingo Nights, paint nails on Manicure Day, or  volunteer with the Maui Pet Therapy program to provide bunnies and dogs for the residents to pet. For more information please contact Activities Director Teresa Lopes at (808)-871-9259.

Our Inspiration: We were inspired by the "Twilight Wish Foundation,” which grants wishes for senior citizens. We modeled our project after this program and while we first considered interviewing all the residents of Hale Makua, it proved to be impractical. So we have decided to narrow it down to people who were particularly lonely because they do not have any family on Maui, and can’t afford to do anything special for themselves.

Which Girl is Responsible for What? Each girl is responsible for a specific part of the project. Ryanne does the interviewing and writing of their life histories, Leslee is creating a web page to raise public awareness , Shannon makes speeches and shows Power Point presentations to prospective donors, and Aurora coordinates the granting of the wishes and will throw a celebratory party for the donors and recipients.
